The Musical Journey of Mariano Salcedo: A Fusion of Passion and Technology

Mariano Salcedo ’25 has always felt a deep connection to music, even if it took a different path for him to truly embrace that passion. Growing up in Mexico and Texas, he faced barriers that made it difficult to pursue music in a traditional sense. “There are no bands in Mexican public schools,” he notes, reflecting on how socioeconomic disparities influenced his early exposure to music. While some families could afford instruments and lessons, Salcedo’s family could not. However, his affinity for music never waned; he became a fervent listener, cultivating a love that would later define his academic and professional endeavors.

Currently, Salcedo is the Alex Rigopulos Fellow in Music Technology and Computation, pursuing a master’s degree in the inaugural cohort of the Music Technology and Computation Graduate Program at MIT. This program, spearheaded by Professor Eran Egozy, represents a unique collaboration between the Music and Theater Arts Section of the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences and the School of Engineering. The aim is to innovate and explore new computational approaches to music, fostering a creative environment where talented individuals like Salcedo can thrive.

Before diving deep into music technology, Salcedo earned a Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence and Decision Making from MIT. His academic journey began in mechanical engineering, influenced by the QuestBridge program. He recalls thinking that if he loved engineering and science, MIT would be an ideal place to study. Yet, his trajectory shifted after an enlightening encounter with a language model chatbot, sparking awe and curiosity about artificial intelligence and its applications in music technology. He switched majors, despite being two-thirds through his mechanical engineering coursework, illustrating his dedication to following his passion.

Salcedo’s research focuses on neural cellular automata (NCA), which creatively merges classical cellular automata concepts with machine learning, resulting in images that regenerate in response to music. He describes this innovative approach as a way to “show” sounds in action, enabling anyone to generate captivating music-driven visuals. A web interface he designed allows users to manipulate the relationship between music energy and the NCA system, giving birth to unique visual performances driven by any audio stream. His desire is profound: “I want the visuals to complement and elevate the listening experience.”

Under the guidance of mentors like Egozy, Salcedo has flourished. Egozy praises him as a multidisciplinary researcher who exemplifies how technology can enhance human creativity. Salcedo’s enthusiasm for discovery and collaboration underscores the program’s ethos, inviting students to explore and develop their individual interests while being supported by faculty who prioritize genuine learning and growth.

Salcedo’s extracurricular activities have also shaped his vibrant experience. He feels a sense of belonging with the fraternity Sigma Nu, fostering camaraderie that enhances his academic pursuits. A transformative trip to Chile in 2023 through MIT’s MISTI program allowed him to conduct music technology research, further broadening his understanding of global music landscapes. The culture of collaboration at MIT has been pivotal in shaping his approach to both scholarship and music creation.

In addition to his research, Salcedo actively participates in the MIT community. He presented his work on “Artificial Dancing Intelligence: Neural Cellular Automata for Visual Performance of Music” at the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence conference, showcasing his dedication to advancing understanding and applications of AI in the creative fields.

Beyond the immediate realm of music visualization, Salcedo envisions broader implications of his research. He poses questions about the modeling of complex, self-organized systems—like multicellular organisms, flocks of birds, and social dynamics—where collaborative interactions result in outcomes greater than their individual parts. This exploration reflects a deep commitment to understanding societal behaviors through the lens of technology, hoping to inform ethical discussions surrounding AI’s evolving presence in our lives.
