An Economic Boost for Entrepreneurs in Los Angeles County
The Los Angeles County Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) has taken an encouraging step towards fostering entrepreneurship with the recent allocation of $140,000 in Entrepreneurship Academy Grants. These grants, part of the Small Business Mobility Fund (SBMF), are aimed directly at empowering local entrepreneurs and small business owners, with 70 recipients set to benefit from direct capital aimed at enhancing their ventures.
Grant Details and Purpose
Each awardee in this initiative will receive $2,000 to support various critical aspects of launching or growing their business. The budget can cover essential costs such as business licensing and permits, website development, branding, inventory, and equipment purchases, along with intellectual property protections and improvements to their business premises. This financial assistance is not just a handout; it’s a lifeline for many small businesses that often struggle to secure funding through traditional banking channels.
A Community-Centric Initiative
Unveiled on January 8, the SBMF Entrepreneurship Academy Grants Program is implemented in collaboration with the Initiating Change in Our Neighborhoods Community Development Corporation (ICON CDC). This initiative is funded through the County’s Care First Community Investment (CFCI) initiative and strategically supports graduates of DEO’s Entrepreneurship Academies. These academies are pivotal components of the DEO’s Economic Mobility Initiative (EMI), targeting barriers faced by aspiring entrepreneurs and expanding access to education, training, technical assistance, and capital.
The Entrepreneurship Academies are thorough, cohort-based programs lasting between 8 to 10 weeks, equipping participants with invaluable tools and knowledge for business success. Topics such as business planning, marketing strategies, and financial management are covered to ensure that entrepreneurs leave with the foundation needed for real-world application. Since the program’s inception in 2024, over 900 participants have successfully graduated across all five Supervisorial Districts, with the latest grants supporting 70 of these motivated individuals in bringing their business plans to fruition.
Voices from the Community
Local leaders have expressed their enthusiasm and commitment to supporting entrepreneurs. Los Angeles County Chair and First District Supervisor Hilda L. Solis stated, “I’m proud that these grants are giving our local entrepreneurs the boost they need to turn their ideas into reality.” She underscores the importance of supporting small businesses, especially in a climate where federal policies may overlook their needs.
Similarly, Second District Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell emphasized the aim of the Economic Mobility Initiative to provide equitable access to resources for all entrepreneurs in the region—regardless of their socioeconomic background. She noted that these grants are emblematic of a targeted policy investment that creates genuine opportunities for small business growth.
Entrepreneurs Share Their Aspirations
Those receiving these grants have voiced their gratitude and excitement. Sheldon Botler, founder of Sheldon Botler Mixed Media, remarked, “The EMI program has solidified my foundation and now, it is time to scale.” He plans to use the funding to broaden his reach to national audiences, demonstrating the transformative potential of such support.
Another awardee, Keshia Mills, founder of Winter Grace Chocolates, expressed her appreciation for the resources made available through the program. She believes that support like this not only strengthens her business but also nurtures innovation and community service.
Ongoing Opportunities for Entrepreneurs
While applications for the Entrepreneurship Academy Grant have already closed, the SBMF still offers additional funding avenues. Notably, applications for Launch Grants are open, aimed at supporting entrepreneurs looking to establish brick-and-mortar locations in unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. Eligible businesses can receive $5,000 for non-retail commercial spaces and $10,000 for retail storefronts, with the application deadline extended to March 31.
